Topographical Contour Map Reading Demonstration (Teacher-Developed, Classroom-Tested)
|
Product Information
It’s difficult to understand how contour lines on a two-dimensional map relate to both the vertical and horizontal features of a three-dimensional landform. This kit, developed by teacher Rich Marrano, helps students make the spatial visualization connection. Each pair of students is given a relief model of a landform and a topographical map depicting the model. The teacher places a clear, graduated (in both cm and inches) version of the same model onto the overhead projector. After drawing the outline of the projected image onto the chalkboard, a measured interval (representing a vertical height) of colored water is added to the overhead model. The outline, or contour line, of each new increment of water is then drawn on the board, until the entire landform is filled and a corresponding topographical map, is created. Includes instructions. Grades 6–9.
