Product Information
Ohio teacher Ron Bowerman has come up with a great way to "engineer" success with this hands-on building activity. This kit challenges students to design and construct an airplane wing support bar (spar), while adhering to design and material specifications. Then students test the strength of their designs, using our specially designed stress tester.
While the spars may "fail" or break, the teaching rubric for this activity allows your students to succeed every time, by following the proper steps. This great cross-curricular kit reinforces critical concepts of force, motion, team building, creative thinking, problem solving, design and craftsmanship.
The complete kit Includes T-pins, medicine cups with lids, sand paper, carpenter's glue, X-acto knives, ruler/protractors, spar stress tester, balsa wood, pattern and complete
instructions. The refill kit Includes T-pins, sand paper, glue and balsa wood. A pail (approx. 5 gal.), scale and sand (approximately 50 lbs.) — all sold separately — are also necessary for the stress tests. Grades 6-12.
